A semi flatbed trailer on the U.S. National Network is normally 102 inches (8.5 feet) wide. That is the federal width limit for commercial motor vehicles without an overwidth permit. The figure answers most width questions, but it hides two decisions that matter more for buyers and fleet operators. First, does your cargo fit inside that width? How Wide Is a Standard Semi Flatbed Trailer?<\/h2>\n

A standard semi flatbed trailer is 102 inches (8.5 feet) wide across the deck \u2014 the maximum width states must allow on the U.S. National Network without an overwidth permit. The limit comes from 23 CFR 658.15. The rule bars states from setting a width above or below 102 inches (about 2.6 meters) on the National Network. The one exception is Hawaii, which may keep a 108-inch maximum. Off the National Network, many states drop the limit to 96 inches (8 feet) on local roads. A trailer that is legal on an interstate may not be legal on a county road two miles away.<\/p>\n

Deck height is usually about 5 feet. Standard lengths run 48 to 53 feet. Shorter 20-, 40-, and 45-foot platforms are common for container work. Width stays the same across these lengths. A 48-foot and a 53-foot standard flatbed are both 8.5 feet wide. We build to this baseline by default and check the access roads at both ends of the haul. What the 102-Inch Figure Really Means: Overall, Usable, and Loaded Width<\/h2>\n

The 102-inch figure is the overall legal width of the vehicle and its load. The figure is not the bare deck, and not the space you can fill. Two adjustments decide whether a load is both legal and loadable. The first is usable width. Rub rails, stake pockets, side rails, and tie-down hardware sit along the outer edges of the deck. So the clear loading width between rails can be a few inches narrower than 102 inches. Buyers who plan cargo to a full 102 inches sometimes find the last inches already taken by hardware. We give buyers both numbers, overall width and usable deck width. That way, cargo is planned against the dimension that holds it.<\/p>\n

The second adjustment is the loaded measurement. The legal width limit covers the widest point of the vehicle and load together. That point may be the cargo, the trailer body, or tie-down equipment, not just the deck surface. If cargo sits flush within the 102-inch deck, you are inside the limit. If it overhangs even a few inches per side, the whole combination becomes an oversize load that needs a permit. Some buyers size a trailer to the deck and forget that the load has to fit inside that width too. The overhang then tends to surface at the first weigh station, not in the yard.<\/p>\n
