Petroleum trailer specifications divide into two groups: shell material, wall thickness and bulkhead positions are fixed at certification, while capacity, compartment count and fittings stay configurable until the build starts. The product’s entry in the Hazardous Materials Table decides which cargo tank specification applies, not the fuel’s trade name. In US fuel distribution that specification is most often DOT 406, which sets no single maximum cargo volume. Working capacity comes instead from the route’s permitted gross combination mass and product density. Classification closes first, because reclassifying a certified tank is tightly controlled. Permitted mass closes next: volume, axle count and material all read from it.

Specification dimension

Value or governing variable

MAWP band

2.65–4 psig (49 CFR 178.346-1(b))

Vacuum loading

Not permitted on this specification (49 CFR 178.346-1(c))

Shell materials

Aluminium, mild steel, HSLA steel, austenitic stainless; minimum thickness varies by material and rated-capacity band (49 CFR 178.346-2, Tables I–II)

Minimum aluminium shell thickness

0.160 in from above 4,500 to 8,000 gal rated capacity; 0.173 in above 8,000 to 14,000 gal (49 CFR 178.346-2, Table II)

Maximum spacing between bulkheads, baffles or ring stiffeners

60 in (49 CFR 178.346-2, Table II, note 1)

Bottom outlets

Stop-valves meeting 49 CFR 178.345-11 (49 CFR 173.242(b)(2))

Compartment count

Depends on grades carried per dispatch and on drop sequence

Working capacity

Depends on the route’s permitted gross combination mass and product density

What a Petroleum Trailer Carries, and Which Rulebook Sets the Limits

Cargo tank authorisation for a given lading runs through the Hazardous Materials Table in 49 CFR 172.101. ADR, the European agreement governing road carriage of dangerous goods, assigns tank codes through the substance entry; elsewhere a national approval governs, and the registering authority decides which. Confirm the regime in writing before fabrication, because the factory certificate has to match what the registration reads.

Why the 9,000-Gallon Figure Is Not a Specification Limit

The 9,000-gallon ceiling quoted for road fuel tankers comes from weight law and product density; DOT 406 prescribes no single maximum cargo volume. What it prescribes instead are minimum wall thickness bands that step up as rated capacity rises. Metal follows volume. In aluminium, Table II of 49 CFR 178.346-2 requires 0.160 in of shell up to 8,000 gal rated capacity and 0.173 in above it.

Practical capacity stays bounded by those thickness bands together with outage, axle loading, bridge limits, vehicle dimensions and route-specific weight law. Any one of them can bind before the others, so a volume figure means little until the binding constraint is named.

Price the thickness step before signing a volume. Crossing the 8,000-gallon band edge raises the minimum shell section by roughly 8% across the whole shell, on a tank that also gains surface area. Volume specified a few hundred gallons past a band edge can therefore return less incremental payload than the nominal increase suggests. Added shell area, thicker material, extra fittings and axle distribution all enter the tare calculation. Checking rated capacity against the band edges in Tables I and II before releasing a drawing costs nothing; finding the step afterwards means fabricating a new shell. We check that band position as part of drawing release, because the cheapest place to lose payload is a volume figure chosen for roundness.

Working Capacity as an Output of Weight Law and Product Density

Working capacity on a petroleum trailer is the volume that fits inside the permitted gross combination mass, once tractor mass, trailer tare and product density are subtracted. One shell therefore yields different usable litres for gasoline and for diesel. The relationship can be approximated as follows.

usable volume ≈ (permitted gross combination mass − tractor mass − trailer tare) ÷ product density

The 34,000 kg payload allowance used here is a simplified illustration for a higher-GCM operating market, and is not representative of a standard US Interstate combination; substitute your own figures. Gasoline at about 0.75 kg/L gives roughly 45,300 L. Diesel at about 0.84 kg/L gives roughly 40,500 L in the same tank. The gap of close to 4,800 L is density, not equipment. A shell sized on gasoline runs a compartment short on diesel. In US Interstate service the gross ceiling binds far earlier, so the same shell is ordered smaller or run part-filled.

The approximation assumes a tank filled to nominal volume and a gross limit that binds first, which makes both litre figures worked examples on published densities and not performance predictions. The formula ignores the outage required above the liquid surface, and any axle-by-axle or bridge-formula limit that binds earlier, so treat the result as an upper bound. Overall trailer dimensions follow from the same exercise in reverse. Once volume is fixed, the route’s dimensional limits and the volume-per-unit-length of the chosen cross-section set the envelope. Axle count follows from how that mass has to be distributed. Confirm the permit for the intended route with the road authority before fixing the volume. All three then stop moving together. Tractor selection and route weight permitting are separate exercises with their own approvals, and neither is settled on a tank drawing.

Shell Material Beyond the Payload Argument

Shell material trades payload against corrosion life and repairability, and the weighting shifts with how close the route runs to its weight limit. Local repair capability shifts it further. For rated capacity above 8,000 gal, Table II requires 0.129 in of mild steel against 0.173 in of aluminium, roughly 34% more wall section for the aluminium build.

Weight is half the story. Run the thickness figures against the metals and the payload case looks more modest than its usual presentation. With aluminium near 2.70 g/cm³ and steel near 7.85 g/cm³, the thicker shell on an aluminium tank trailer still lands at approximately 46% of the mild-steel equivalent for identical geometry. The saving is closer to half than to the two-thirds a density comparison alone implies. It narrows further once fittings and running gear are counted.

If your routes run well below the permitted gross mass with frequent short drops, the aluminium premium buys payload you never use, and a carbon steel build is the cheaper correct answer. Where the product attacks aluminium, austenitic stainless becomes the material answer, carrying its own thickness and cost position in the same tables.

Compartments, Bulkheads and Baffles Against the Drop Sequence

Compartment count on a fuel tank trailer follows from the grades carried per dispatch and from the drop sequence. Shell reinforcement follows from tank length instead, because the specification caps spacing between bulkheads, baffles and ring stiffeners at 60 in. A shell long enough to need reinforcement at that pitch will carry it whether the compartment plan is generous or lean.

What changes with the compartment plan is the form that reinforcement takes. Bulkheads create liquid-tight compartments. Baffles restrict liquid movement without separating cargo, so grades that must never mix belong either side of a bulkhead. Ring stiffeners reinforce the shell without dividing the cargo space at all, so a leaner compartment plan can still satisfy the spacing requirement. The saving from fewer compartments shows up in manlids, valves, piping and the vapour recovery header rather than in the reinforcement requirement itself.

Fill limits per compartment come from the outage rule that applies to the product and jurisdiction, which sits below the nameplate volume. Confirm which rule the registering authority applies before freezing compartment sizes. We compare the compartment plan against the drop pattern a fleet actually runs, because a plan matching the product list but not the delivery order forces resequenced drops or part-loads. On units working dusty, high-ambient terminals with several drops a shift, manlid seals and vapour recovery poppets are usually the first fittings to need re-checking. Their count follows from the compartment plan.

What to Verify Before the Trailer Leaves the Yard

Acceptance of a new fuel tank trailer turns on the manufacturer’s certificate, the test and inspection baseline, and the interface fittings, with the exact list depending on the registering market and the loading points served. Classification closes first, because reclassification across specification families sits under tight control once a tank is certified. Permitted mass closes next, because volume, axle count and shell material all read from it, and moving it later moves all three.

Whether a build survives its first inspection cycle depends on details only project data settles: the terminal’s adapter standard, the outage rule the registering authority applies, and the environment the tank parks in. We align the drawing against the permitted gross mass for your route before quoting, so the volume on the order is the volume you can lawfully carry.

Five decisions move the price more than the rest, and they move it in predictable directions. Shell material and its thickness band set the metal cost and the tare penalty together. Compartment count multiplies manlids, vent valves, bottom valves and the vapour recovery header, so it drives cost faster than volume does. Axle count and suspension type follow from permitted mass, and they carry both purchase and tyre cost with them. Discharge equipment scales with the loading and unloading process the fleet runs: adapter type, meter, pump and hose reels. Certification route adds cost and calendar time wherever a registered inspector or a destination-market approval is involved.

What you assemble depends on which seat you are in. A fleet replacing units already knows its routes and drop pattern. An importer specifying for a market fixes the approval regime first. An engineer checking someone else’s specification works backwards from the plate.

No petroleum trailer specification closes without the nine inputs below, and each one moves either the shell, the compartment plan or the axle group. Items 1 to 3 do the most work: they bound the specification family and the volume, and the rest is fitted inside them.

Product list with the grades carried on a single dispatch, and which of them must never share a compartment

HMT entry or bulk-packaging section your products are classified to, where known

Permitted gross combination mass for the intended route, plus the axle and bridge limits that apply within it

Tractor make and configuration, with unladen mass

Registering market and the regime it applies: DOT specification number, ADR tank code, or national approval

Loading terminal interface: bottom-loading adapter standard, vapour recovery connection, metering arrangement

Drop pattern: drops per shift and typical volume per drop

Outage rule the authority applies to your products

Parking and loading environment, including whether the tank sits loaded overnight, plus locally available capability to repair the chosen shell material

If your grades and permitted mass are already settled, put those two figures against a build sheet. A DOT 406 tank may already be authorised for certain chemical ladings where the HMT entry routes bulk packaging to §173.242 and pressure and material-compatibility requirements are met. Re-marking it as a DOT 407 or DOT 412 tank is a separate matter with its own design and testing requirements.

Is vapour recovery required in every market?

Vapour recovery obligations attach to the loading terminal and the local emission rule, not to the trailer. Confirm the requirement with the terminal operator and the environmental authority for each loading point, since one fleet can face different obligations on different routes.

How soon is a new tank due for its first periodic test?

Interval clocks under 49 CFR 180.407 run from the certification date, so a unit built months before shipment arrives with part of its interval already spent. Two units delivered the same week can therefore fall due in different years.

Can one compartment carry a different product on each trip?

Product changes within a compartment depend on residue compatibility and on the cleaning capability available between loads, alongside whatever the applicable HMT entry permits for both ladings.

Fuel Tanker Trailer Sizes: Capacity Tiers by Use Case — takes the capacity arithmetic above and lands it on specific capacity tiers by use case

What Are the Safety Features of a Fuel Tanker Trailer? — expands the emergency shutoff and bottom valve items on the acceptance list into the full safety package

How Does A Fuel Tanker Trailer Work? — the prior question behind the compartment and discharge decisions covered here

How to Transport Hazardous Materials in a Fuel Tanker Trailer? — carries the classification logic forward into the compliance duties that attach in transit

How to Maintain a Fuel Tanker Trailer? — what happens between the inspection intervals set under 49 CFR 180.407

A petroleum trailer is a tank semi-trailer for refined fuels.
